For decades Union Retirees have been advocating and campaigning with the labour movement and community allies for a national single payer pharmacare program. The Senate this week passed the bill that will start the process to that goal.

Thanks to the NDP who cleverly leveraged the program in a minority government, millions of Canadians will now be able to access life-saving medications for diabetes treatment, and contraceptives for 9 million people. This is a big victory for all Canadians, now we must encourage our provincial governments to partner with the federal governments to make it a reality.

The Liberals had promised for four elections and Conservatives have been against it since Universal Health Care was introduced in the 1960’s. For decades, big pharmaceuticals fought against a universal plan. It was only the NDP who kept the goal alive and delivered the progress we have made. With a federal election soon, we must continue to organize to ensure that this benefit reaches the people who need it. Pierre Poilievre and his Conservatives have fought against pharmacare at every step of the way, and the election could jeopardize the program if they form government.

The Congress of Union Retirees of Canada (CURC) and MFUR will continue through the next election to mobilize with the labour movement and the NDP, not only to cement this major victory, but to safeguard and grow it in the future.
